Bakert,
Charles J, Buffalo, only son of Charles
Bakert and Mary (Schwartz) Bakert, daughter of
John Schwartz, his wife, was born in Buffalo,
N. Y., May 29, 1855. His father, a native of
Baden Baden, Germany was
brought to America by his parents when a
child and spent his active life in Buffalo,
following the trade of butcher. His maternal grandfather,
John Schwartz, by whom he was
reared from childhood, wasfor many years a well
known and prosperous farmer of Buffalo; he was later a real
estate dealer, and sold a large portion of Forest
Lawn to the association.
Mr. Bakert was
educated in the public and high schools, was graduated from
Bryant & Stratton’s BusinessCollege, and for a time
was assistant bookkeeper for the Eagle Iron Works. He read law
with E. C. Hawks, Quinby & Sicard, and also with Hon. A.
P. Nichols, and was admitted to the bar January 4, 1878.
Shortly afterward he opened a law office at the corner of
Main and Swan streets and
successfully built up a large court and general practice. In
1881 be removed to No. 530 William street, where he has since conducted a general office
business, acting also as agent for the Globe and the Dun
Accumulating Savings and Loan Association. He is a Republican,
for seven years was a district committeeman and chairman of
the board, has repeatedly served as delegate to city, county,
assembly and judiciary conventions and is a member of the
Royal Arcanum. He married Mary Oberfeld Bakert of Hamburg, N. Y., and they
have four sons and four daughters.

Golden Years: 50th
Weddings
Mr.
and Mrs. Howard J. Bakert of Eggertsville celebrated their
50th wedding anniversary with a family dinner and reception
held at the home of their daughter in Buffalo.
Bakert and Jane Catherine Craig were married Jan. 30, 1943, in
St. Benedicts Catholic Church, Eggertsville. The Bakert's are
retried owners and operators of Bakert's Food Shoppe ,
Eggertsville.The
couple has seven children and 11 grandchildren.

Jane C. Bakert, who was co-owner of an
Amherst food store, died
Wednesday (Jan. 23, 2002) in SistersHospital
after a brief illness. She was 77. Known to many AmherstHigh
School graduates as "Mrs. B," she
operated Bakert's Food Shoppe, 4209 Main
St., Eggertsville, for nearly 50
years with her husband, Howard. They retired from the business
in the mid-1980s. Mrs. Bakert also was a talented and
sought-after dressmaker and worked for a time as a seamstress
for Marie Andre Dress Shop, Eggertsville. Born Jane Craig in
Syracuse, she moved to the
Buffalo area as a child and
attended Buffalo public schools.She enjoyed sewing,
knitting, crocheting, embroidering, needlework and reading as
well as making stuffed-animal toys and clothing for her
grandchildren. She was a member of St. Benedict's Catholic
Church. Mrs. Bakert is survived by her husband of 59 years,
Howard; a daughter, Bonnie Anne McGee of Buffalo; five sons, Michael C. of
Chatham, N.J., Robert M. of Atlanta, William C. of Lexington, Ky., Donald P. of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and James C. of Portland, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and
a great-grandchild.

Howard J. Bakert, who had
operated an Amherst delicatessen with his
wife, died Tuesday in his Eggertsville home of natural causes.
He was 88.A
lifelong resident of Eggertsville, Mr. Bakert was a member of
AmherstHigh School's first
graduating class. During World War II, he worked at
Curtiss-Wright's Aircraft Division.Meanwhile, he and his
wife had operated Bakert's Food Shoppe, 4209 Main
St., a favorite with AmherstHigh
School students, for more than 50
years. They retired in the mid-1980s.Mr. Bakert was a
longtime member of St. Benedict Catholic Church. He was an
exempt life member of Snyder Fire Department and a past
president of its exempt volunteers. He also had coached Little
League baseball.His wife of 59 years, Jane C. Craig Bakert, died in
2002.Survivors
include a daughter, Bonnie A. McGee of Buffalo; five sons, Michael C. of
Chatham, N.J., Robert M. of Atlanta, William C. of Lexington, Ky., Donald P. of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and James C. of Williamsburg,
Va.; a brother,
Arthur of Utica; 12 grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren.A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m.
Saturday in St. Benedict Church, 1317 Eggert
Road at Main
Street, Eggertsville, after prayers
at 9:30 in Dengler & Roberts Funeral Home, 2070 Eggert Road,
Amherst. Burial
